Commercial building, characterized by the most abundant forms and various types, is identified as the most widely distributed public building. The commercial space formed by the commercial building often becomes the public social center and attention center which is considered as the stage of citizen's life and embodies the features of the city. The threshold of commercial building, one of the vital components of the commercial space and urban open space, plays the crucial role in a single building. Meanwhile, it is considered as the transition, mediator and juxtaposition between urban space and commercial space. However, some deficiency or defects have appeared both in the threshold design and construction of most commercial building due to the city congestion and the scale limitation of open space in our country. This paper proceeds from the basic characteristics of commercial building, commercial threshold and its development history to explore the constructing approaches of threshold in terms of substance morphology. It has analyzed people's psychological requirements of commercial threshold and the features of constituent elements of threshold. Additionally from the perspective of urban design it has macroscopically discussed the commercial threshold and its design form. The concluding solutions and principles have been drawn from this research, which try to make an integral system analysis for the threshold design of commercial building in our country. It also attempts to propose the fundamental principles and approaches to provide reference for the more orderly development of threshold design of urban commercial building in our country.
