The object of this study is about the shaft seals of high-speed turbines widely used at home and abroad. Firstly, this paper reviews the development of high-speed turbine's shaft seals, sums up the advantages and disadvantages of each seals used in every stage. And then presents the developing trend of shaft seals in gas turbines. Secondly, this paper analyzes the structure, principal and character of the Gas Hydrodynamic Non-Contacting Face Seals, states that the use of this new type is mature and reliable. Then, the main seal performance parameters, such as bearing capacity, friction force of the face, frictional power loss, and leakage rate were calculated. The influence of the operation conditions and the spiral groove's geometric parameters on seal performance was also analyzed. Finally, the author concludes that the study of the latest Gas Hydrodynamic Non-Contacting Face Seals will be of great significance for applying it in sealing the hazardous and toxic fluids in petrol- chemical industry. The research results provided valuable reference for design of the spiral groove dry gas seal.
