The main idea of this paper was put forward as a result of rapid developmentof Chinese expressway construction and the condition of road surface detection, etc.The purpose to carry out this research is discussed in detail. The significance ofsociety and economy to study the subject is also discussed. The target to achievefrom this research is given. Based on the information gathered by the author andthe existing hardware, the feasibility of achieving the goal is discussed. Since 1984, China has begun to build the first expressway. After nearly twentyyears' development, the total length of China expressway is the second longest inthe world and still keeps growing. To keep the using performance of the builtexpressway, the development of expressway maintenance and managementtechnologies need to keep up with the development of the expressway constructionso as to satisfy the rapid development of expressway. But because of economic andtechnical reasons, the expressway detection devices, expressway maintenance andmanagement institute face severe shortage, and the detection method is still thetraditional manual detection method. The traditional method has manydisadvantages, such as inefficiency, heavy working intensity, high risks, large error,out of line with the development of expressway. Therefore, the detection devicethat adapted to our country's expressway is in dire need of developing. A suit ofasphalt expressway distress intelligence detection and recognition system thatadapted to our country's expressway is researched and developed based on therelated technologies home and abroad. The knowledge field related to this systemis very wide, such as optics, electronics, mechanics and computer vision. The classification and the cause of formation of the road surface distress areanalyzed elaborately. Only the patterns and the causes of formation are intensivelyunderstood and mastered, the right maintenance measure might be selected tomaintain the expressway. The maintenance of road surface crack is the first step ofroad surface maintenance, if this step is well done, the other road surface diseasescan be prevented, and the maintenance cost can be reduced. The evaluationstandard of road surface disrepair status is given, the standard is the corefoundation of researching and developing the detection and recognition system.The components of the intelligent detection and recognition system areintroduced elaborately. The selection method and reason of each kind of hardwareare discussed fully. The linkage and working principle of the hardware areillustrated with frame chart.The software R&D environment of the detection and recognition system isintroduced briefly. The working flow and principle of the software are introducedelaborately. The working interface of the software is given. The method ofconfirming the road surface image threshold and related theories are systematicallydiscussed. The process of road surface detection and recognition is introduced indetail. The inside and outside appearance images of the whole roadbed and roadsurface detection vehicle are given.The system mainly contains two aspects of the distress processing and thedistress rate recognition, and the aspect of road surface image processing isuppermost. In order to find an arithmetic that adapted to process the expresswaysurface image, the author spends a large of time on researching the characteristic ofthe asphalt road surface image. An adaptive road surface threshold confirmingmethod is put forward after carrying out a mass of experiment. Then the roadsurface image is segmented and filtered. The road surface distress characteristics isextracted, the road surface distress rate and road surface status are given.The road surface image contains many noises because of the road surfaceimage collection system error, the difference of the road surface material grain, thestain on the road surface. So the difficulty to detect and recognize the road surfacedistress is increased. The main aspect is image segmentation. The difficulty can besolved effectively with the method put forward in this paper.To verify the veracity of processing image with the system developed in thispaper, the test to the ChangYing expressway was conducted on the spot. Theprocessing result using the system is compared with the theoretically correct result,it is indicated that the precision of this system could satisfy the real road surfacedetection.
