Cutting of sheet metal to produce part is a necessary process in ship manufacture, and it is evident that nesting before the process maximizes material utilization and economizes cost. This paper analyzes and classifies nesting problem in sheet metal manufacture process. Single part nesting, different-shaped parts combinatorial nesting and rectangle parts combinatorial nesting are studied in detail. The management of nesting information is achieved acrossing relational database of nesting information. Accordingly improve material utilization and work efficiency.Nesting problem is a kind of optimal problem with geometric constraints and technological constraints in sheet manufacture as well. Single part nesting and different-shaped parts combinatorial nesting are studied basing manufacture practicality in this paper. Part enclosure algorithm is first used and then optimize nesting of rectangle parts. According to theory of "based on sheet width", genetic algorithm is tentatively used for rectangle parts nesting optimization.A suit of optimal nesting of ship sheet is framed based on AutoCAD, primary module including: management of parts information, management of sheet information, management of stock parts, pretreatment of part information, single part nesting, different-shaped parts combinatorial nesting and output of nesting graphics information.
