Study On Regionalism Design Of City Plazas

While globalization in economy, communication and technology has enriched our life and created new spirit contemporarily, it has brought many negative effects which cannot be neglected. The sameness of development and the mono-orientation of cultural value are leading to diminish and eventually extinguish the regional culture expression. In the whole world over, cities and buildings are becoming similarly, and meanwhile the regional characteristics are fading away. In this situation, the importance of regionalism design approach has been realized, and this approach has been applied by more and more designers.City plaza, so called "city's living room" or "city's name card", is critical place for a city to maintain its unique characteristics and express its regional culture. City plaza, however, is an introduced element for the city space system in our country. It is a very urgent and important issue for us to figure out how to combine a plaza with local city space system and maintain the regional characteristics in that city. So we not only need study the theory of urban design but also should carry out the research within specific area focusing on its regional characteristics.Based on those thinking, I have focused on "Xiamen Island—Gulang Island" region, which is called "Xiagu region" in the thesis, and taken this region as a case study. Chapter 1: Introduction. It mainly discusses the importance and urgency of the reach, the reason to choose the study area, and the methods used in this reach paper. Chapter 2: General Review of City Plaza. At first, it reviews the history of development and category of city plaza. Then it elaborates the theories of urban design and the analysis methods of city space which are related to plaza design. Chapter 3: The Basic Study of The Regionalism Design Approach in the Field of City Plaza Design. First of all, it elaborates the related issues of regionalism design approach. Secondly, it turns to analyze the relationship between city plaza design and the regional factors which affect the plaza design, including nature, culture, economy and technology. In the end, it reveals the key point of the regionalism design for city plaza, the way of "responsive design". Chapter 4: The Analysis of the Regional Elements of Xiagu Region. It analyzes and then synthesizes all the regional factors which affects the plaza design.
