Nowadays, Chongqing is the economic center of southwest China and the upper stream area of Yangtze River. And in modern times it was also the finance center of southwest region, and even the whole country.The modernization of Chongqing began with opening port in Qing Dynasty. At that time Chengdu was the political and finance center of Sichuan and Chongqing subordinated to it. Finance industry developed along with the prosperity of modern commerce in Chongqing. Old-style Chinese private banks like exchange shops and hockshops evolved into banks gradually. Finance industry appeared new situation in Sichuan——the economic center position of Chongqing was more and more outstanding and it replaced Chengdu gradually and became the finance center of Sichuan and the southwest region until the War of Resistance Against Japan was over.At the opening section, the article reviews the related literature and analyzes investigation data to outline a trace of the rising, developing, booming and declining of the finance industry in Chongqing so that the readers can have certain understanding of the social background of modern finance architecture in Chongqing.
