During the process of overhauling locomotive, the vertical height, which is the distance between the axis of coupler and the above surface of track, should be ensured in a certain extension, In oeder to get over the shortcomings of inefficiency, error-prone and operational inconvenience brought with manual measurement at present in china, it is studied in this paper that the SPCE061A micro-controller is adopt as dominating control-unit in ultrasonic distance measurement equipment to obtain the height of coupler. The system is furnished with advantages of non-contact, high-precision, cheap, user-friendly and so on.The ultrasonic basic theory and principles are strongiy detailed introduced in this paper. Combining with the characteristics of the subject, several schemes of measurement are put forward and fully analyzed in term of error, advantage and disadvantage. Function, stability and reliability are final goals of the design the system. The factors and interferences which will make an effect in measurement accuracy are be analyzed at large and the solution is put forward. On promise of realizing the basic function, the system tries to optimize the design of hardware and software. Considering the temperature which is the main factor affecting measuring precision, temperature compensation circuit is increased. To have the data done morely expediently, the communication interface circuit of USB is also added.Some of the programs and all flow charts are given with modular programming idea adopted. To avoid the sensitive time in which ultrasonic transmit from transmiter to receiver directly, the method of receiving lapsed is adopted. To restrain random interference and pulse interference and improve measurement accuracy and stability, the digital filtering method which average the data crossing the extremum out is adopt.At last, experimental prototype is manufactured and the experimental findings are presented with debugging and testing it. Accordind to the experimental data, we reach a conclusion that the system fully meets the requirements of coupler height measurement.
