Pumped storage plant is an effective measure to adjust peak, fill the valley and enhance efficiency and reliability for electrical power system. Pumped storage machines is a very important part of pumped storage plant and the research on its starting characteristic has always been a key problem. Several starting models for pumped storage machines are available for power plant: auxiliary motor starting; asynchronous starting; synchronous back to back starting; static frequency converter starting; semi-synchronous starting, of which back to back is the commonly used starting model.In this paper, pumped storage machine in some water power plant is taken as research background, and electromagnetic and thermal issues are analyzed in the process of back to back starting.Firstly, development and the domestic and foreign present research situation for pumped storage plant, pumped storage machines, synchronous machine parameters calculation, starting and thermal calculation for pumped storage machine are summarized.In the foundation of elaborating theories and method, no-load electromagnetic field, on load electromagnetic field and parameters for pumped storage machines are calculated with the aid of ANSYS, a finite element analysis software.In this paper, with the help of the ANSYS APDL function and a second development was carried out, calculation method are given for steady parameters and transient parameters in saturated state with the consideration of two kinds of work situation for both generator and motor, then above example of pumped storage machine is taken and calculated.According to the starting process mathematic model summarized in existing papers for pumped storage machines, the example is simulated and calculated,...
