Starting is a key problem for large pumped storage machines. As for the starting methods for pumped storage machines, static frequency converter (SFC) starting is the most popular one at present.In this paper, the development of both domestic and foreign pumped storage plants, pumped storage units, starting and thermal calculation of pumped storage machines are introduced firstly.Based on the existing theory of the parameter calculation of the pumped storage machines, calculation method was given for steady parameters and transient parameters with the consideration of saturation by ANSYS. Then a electrical machine at a pumped storage station was taken as an example, on the basis of which the steady parameters, transient parameters, self inductance and mutual inductance of the damper bars are calculated.In the existing papers about the SFC starting of pumped storage machines, all damper bars are equalized to one circuit. It is not convenient for the analysis of currents in each damper bar. In this paper, the mathematical model of multi-circuits is established considering actual arrangement of the damper bars based on the multi-circuits theory of the electrical machines. On the basis of this mathematical model the process of static frequency converter starting were analyzed in detail. Meanwhile the rules of current, torque, rotational speed were given and several factors influencing starting were analyzed as well.The SFC starting of pumped storage machines is soft staring, during which the temperature rise is not great, but very few papers elaborate how much the temperature will rise.
