With the development of the west of China and the implement of the northeast strategy, we will meet more and more problems about slope stability in cold region. Studying slope stability in freezing-thawing condition is very important to infrastructure.The paper discusses the stability factors, the instability types and the stability estimating method of slope in cold region, and discusses that the freezing-thawing circulation has effect on rock slope and soil slope. Based on the instability of slope in cold region, the slope in cold region can be classified into three types. They are freezing soil sliding, thawing soil sliding and freezing-thawing sliding. Stability of soil sliding is calculated by the limit equilibrium analysis and the strength reduction. Discussing regular variations of slope stability when slope is thawing. Long stability of freezing soil slope is also be discussed and freezing-thawing circulation has some effect on slope.Slope stability is a very complicated system under the freezing-thawing environment, it need being analyzed from the aspects of the moisture, temperature and stress coupling. The paper uses the analysis software of geotechnical engineering, FLAC3D to do the numerical simulation of the moisture, temperature and stress coupling to slope in cold region. Thawing depth of upper soil mass of slope is calculated among different months one year over the thawing periods, and stability of slope is discussed within the different time period. Slope probably happens sliding with increasing thawing depth. The paper primarily discusses that freeze has effect on rock slope through the calculation of the stress field and deformation field of slope in the freezing process.
