The smart rotor technology is the present hotspot in the helicopter world. It is highly potential in reducing the vibration and noise level for helicopter. The work of this thesis is mainly about the design and test of an actuator for a smart rotor with the trailing edge configuration.The smart rotor with active trailing edge is a new system for reducing the vibration which can adjust the air load of the blade to actively counteract the main harmonic of the force to the fuselage by controlling the deflection of the trailing edge. Similarly to other methods for smart rotor, the most important and difficult problem is the design of the actuator. First, the piezoelectric smart material has been studied and an actuator with piezoelectric stack has been proposed in the mode of parallel connection in electrics and series-wound in mechanics according to the property of the piezoelectric porcelain. Second, a 2-X actuator has been designed with the piezoelectric stack active part according to the Triangle Theory. After that, the static and dynamic properties of the actuator has been studied, the dynamic equation has been modeled. Through the analysis, we can see the 2-X actuator can provide the bidirectional force and displacement. In addition, the dynamic equation of the rotor with trailing edges and the 2-X actuator has been modeled for analyzing the aerodynamic performance of the rotor. The result of the analysis tells us that the performance of the rotor with trailing edges can get a remarkable improvement.At last, a test for the 2-X actuator has been performed, in which the static and dynamic output of the actuator has been tested to examine the design. The procedure of the test is as follows: first, the piezoelectric stack has been examined to test the performance parameters of the piezoelectric material; second, the 2-X actuator has been functioned with different static voltage to test its capability; last, function the 2-X actuator with voltage with different frequencies to test its dynamic properties.
