Pumping stations of the East-Route South-to-North Water Transfer Project have 3 characteristics: low lift, great discharge and long-time operation. How to optimum design and to increase the efficiency of the pump system based on the characteristics is an extremely important work for the Project.Feasibility and accuracy of 3D method for numerical simulation of the flow in an axial flow pump sector and pumping system has been studied. A vertical pump system, which consists of ZBM791 hydraulic model of axial flow pump, elbow inlet and straight outlet, is researched by the method of numerical simulation.Control equations of numerical simulation include continuity equation and Reynolds Navier-Stokes equation with standard k ?εturbulent model. The Finite-Volume-Method is utilized for discretization of the control equations. SIMPLEC algorithm is applied to pump sector and pumping system's numerical simulation.Inorder to research the feasibility of numerical simulation method for hydraulic machinery interior 3D turbulent flow, pump sector has been studied with numerical simulation method. This is important stage that can not be absent. The comparison of numerical simulation result and model test result indicate that numerical simulation method for hydraulic machinery interior's 3D turbulent flow is feasible and accurate.Considering the requirement for the East-Route South-to-North Water Transfer Project, the main dimensions and water levels of a large pumping station has been utilized, interior 3D turbulent flow of the inlet and outlet conduits are simulated numerically. In the light of the calculated results, the flow pattern and characteristics of the inlet and outlet conduits have been analysed.
