In this paper, a 3-D parametric finite element model for a pressurized cylinder with a long rectangular tube joint was established using the finite element software FEPG. The characteristics of the stress distribution in the rectangular joint were studied, and the strength evaluation for the pressurized cylinder with a long rectangular tube joint was conducted according to the analytical design code. Structural reinforcement measures were proposed in order to reduce the stress level of the joint which can not be effectively reduced by increasing the thickness of the cylinder or tube wall. It is found that the membrane stress plays a controlling role comparing with the bending stress according to the code of design by analysis.With the finite element calculation results, formula fitting was performed to obtain the primary local membrane stress S_â…¡ which considered the pressure, cylinder thickness, tube thickness, cylinder diameter, tube width and length.
