The box-column and H beam joint is commonly used in steel frame structures.In order to transfer the bending moment at the end of the beam effectively,the stiffing plates should be planted at the column web while at the same hight with the beam flange.However,the stiffing plates would not be planted when the bending moment is small or as a result of constitution reasons.The conditions that should be met of the column flange and the column web at both the tension side and the compression side of the beam were listed on the Chinese code for design of steel structures (GB50017-2003),however,the rules came from the analysis of H-column and H beam joint.As a result of the intrinsical differences between the two joints ,the rules on the Chinese code is not fit for the box-column and H beam joint.The purpose of this essay is to analyse the performance of the joint when no stiffing plate were planted inside the box-column at the position which at the same hight of the tension side of the beam flange.The work that has been done were as following:1) Simplified model for analysis was established.The tension side of the beam flange which was separated from the beam and the box-column formed the model for analysis.The size in detail and the constraint of the model,the axial force of the column,the tension force on the beam flange and the way to apply the force were determined.2) The FEM analysis was conducted with the simplified model.The ANSYS program was chosen to analyse the forty-eight models and the strain and the equivalent stress of the models were discussed when the axial force and the tension force were acted on the joints.The key point of the model was chosen and the force-displacement curves were drawn.The important parameters of the model were analysed.3) The suggested formula to calculate the load capacity of the joint was established.The ruling condition of strength and displacement were established and the stress state of the model at the ruling condition was analysed.Equations were set up with the yield line theory and the energy theory and the suggested formula was derived according to the equation.Conclusions could be drawn:...
