Because of the drawbacks about the present method of measuring the catenary's wear on electric locomotive, a new non-tangent method with the use of digital image processing technology which provides a real time, fast, validity way is presented. It is contains several approaches: image pre-processing, converting the binary image, image enhancement, image segmentation, figure line taking, fitting and smoothing, size calculating etc. A completed system is implemented based on this algorithm and shows its feasibility and validity in an actual usage. This paper mainly introduces processing and analyses of catenary's image using MATLAB language and show the corresponding experimental result.The paper has done research of the principle of the image processing aiming to bring forward practical method to solve the problems occurred in the digital image processing. The paper includes the following aspects.1. We discussed the principle of the digital image processing such as image file formats and converting between them, reading, writing and displaying images.2. The image of analogue worn part is enhanced by using the method of the statistics of histogram and filter analysis such as smoothing, sharpening, noise processing, contrast extending of the image in order to strengthen the image.3. Studied on the methods about image analysis, and they are used to deal with the enhanced image so that we get the sharper outline image, the chief methods are edge detection and image segmentation.4. It is discussed the method of morphological image processing including dilation, erosion, identify boundary of region and so on. We deal with the processed binary image by using opening, closing, extracting boundary or skeleton operations.
