As a kind of effective passive control devices, viscous dampers can offer sufficient damping to structures, which makes it more reasonable while structures endure external loads and insures the structure's safety. The following aspects are studied in this thesis with consideration of the characters of nonlinear viscous dampers.Based on the consideration of construction and performance mechanics property of the nonlinear viscous dampers, response of the single degree of freedom model with nonlinear viscous damper subjected to external loads of harmonic and earthquake are studied in details. The effect of brace' stiffness on the shock absorption of nonlinear viscous damper is analyzed for the single degree of freedom model.According to the characteristic of the dynamic equations of structures with nonlinear viscous dampers, the numerical analysis methods of linear and nonlinear systems are studied separately and two kinds of numerical methods are imported: methods based on the ordinary differential equations initial-value problem theory and the iteration algorithms based on the Newmark-β assumption. Based on the algorithms mentioned above, some Fortran programs are developed. Some examples are illustrated and results calculated by codes and the finite element procedure Abaqus separately are exactly the same.Tow kinds of structures' restoring force model,the harden bilinear hysteresis model and Bouc-Wen hysteresis model are studied in details. The effect of nonlinear viscous damper on the response of structures with the above hysteresis models are investigated.A 8-storey reinforced concrete frame structures which located in 8 level anti-seismic area is chosen as the analysis object, the time history analysis is performed with the help of nonlinear finite element procedure Abaqus before and after the nonlinear viscous dampers are installed. The validity of nonlinear viscous dampers is demonstrated clearly. The shock absorption of dampers with different speed parameters is compared.
