This paper based on explanation the engineering geologic conditions of Liang Hekou which is damsite of Guo Langqiao hydroelectric power station, found out the main factors that affect rock quality of dam foundation: lithology, rock mass structure, the degree of compactness to rock, unloaded by weathering, properties of discontinuity, especially the dense cranny of low dip angle zone and shear fracture of low dip angle zone are the greatest factor to influence rock quality of dam foundation. It's difficulty to appraising rock quality of dam foundation and also particular to other power station.Because of the most growth cranny, fracture rock at damsite. First, the paper study on discontinuity to classification and appraisement by discontinuity scope and property. It is confirmed that discontinuity is key factor in study on rock quality of dam foundation.Through the single-factor classification and the multi-factors classification methods to classify rock quality of dam foundation. The single-factor classification includes: lithology classification, the degree of weathering and unload classification, rock mass structure classification, wave velocity classification etc. The multi-factors classification included Rock Tunneling Quality Index(Q) classification and Rock Mass Rating(RMR).
