There are different research routes in valuing rock mass mechanical parameters of dam foundation. Based on the different conditions in project scale, geographical environment and rock mass characteristics, in this paper we select three representative hydropower projects and compare their research process of valuing rock mass mechanical parameters of dam foundation. The three projects are Laxiwa hydropower project in Yellow River, JinPing arterial hydropower project and ShiMenKan hydropower project in LiXian River. In this paper, at first we introduce the general situation, lithology, geological structure, weathering and hydrogeology characteristics of every project, compare and analyze their research methods and content of the three projects. Secondly, we introduce five methods of rock mass quality classification. They are RMR classification, BQ classification, Rock mass classification for hydropower project dam foundation, Q system classification and Z system classification. Based on comparing and analyzing their methods of rock mass quality classification of the three projects, we get a convenient and accurate rock mass quality classification method which can be used in a general hydropower project. Then according to the research results before, we introduce their methods and process of valuing dam foundation rock mass mechanical parameters, compare and analyze their methods and research routes, evaluate of the merits and applicability, find out the reasons of using their own methods and routes. In the end, we discuss and get a general research route to value the rock mass mechanical parameters of dam foundation accurately.
