Universal Measuring Microscope (UMM) is an optical two-dimensional coordinate measuring machine with multi-parameters and high-precision. It's also a multifunctional instrument for geometric parameters. It's widely applied in many domains, especially in machine manufacturing. It is very diffcult in operating the UMM by reason of the complex operating process. The low-efficiency and much operators'errors become UMM's deadly shortcomings. With the speedy development of modern communication technology, computer science and exactitude manufacture technics and the demand of automatization, it is increasing importance to acquire information more accurately, more efficiently and more expediently. The UMM does not absolutely satisfy these requirements.According to the current trend of instruments digitallization, with the application of grating measuring technique, CCD camera and digital image processing, UMM could be reformed into a preferable semi-automatical digital measurement instrument. Consequently, it has become very convenient and multifunctional 2D-CMM, the reformation not only does simplifie the operation and improve the measurement efficiency, but also does develop the original instrumnet's potential. The reformed UMM could measure mechanical parts' geometry parameters and obtain many data of parts, it alse could compute distance, angle values and evaluate the geometric tolerances. It is good enough advantage to test screw thread and gears. Moreover, the reformed UMM has many additional functions such as ellipse-matching, self-check, self-study and so on.
