The podded electric propulsor arose in the 1990s and has been applied to many kinds of ships widely; however, the podded propeller brings us a new problem about how to design the large hub-diameter Ratio propeller. The design of propeller is a very important part of ship design. There are two main design methods, theory design and charts design. Firstly this paper reviews the existing research on propeller design both at home and aboard, and then the classification, configuration, advantages, the research and application of concept of podded propulsor are concluded. Based on what is mentioned above, it is clear that the analysis of the method of large hub-diameter Ratio propeller design is necessary.Theory design can't be easily grasped. But charts design can be more easily grasped by common people. In this paper, the author introduces the process of charts design detailedly, and use the propeller design chart and expression of the regressive equations to develop the computer aided design of MAU-series propeller. The open water characteristics of a series of large hub-diameter Ratio MAU propellers are calculated by using lift-surface method to expand the chart of MAU-series propeller.For the different geometry and parameters of the podded propulsor, the propeller performance is different. It is analysed in details. A method to calculate the POD propeller open-water characteristics is proposed by using theoretical prediction method and regression analysis. The open-water characteristics of a series of big boss ratio propellers are calculated by using the lift-surface vortex lattice method and then are regressed into function. Based on the present results, the open water characteristics of a new POD propeller could be calculated with multiple regression analysis and the propeller curve is proposed in this paper.
