Magnetorheological Fluids(MRF) is a new kind of intelligent material. In the action of magnetic field, the rheological properties of MRF changes steplessly, reversibility and significantly. Possessing of these characteristics, MRF is widely used in damping system, gland bush, flexible manufacturing system, smooth surface finish,et. The rheological properties of MRF plays the most important role in MR devices performances. Accurate measuring the key parameter of the MRF's rheological parameters—the yield shear strength and the response time is significant.On the basis of introduction of the rheological parameters of MR fluids, some principles of test methodology for rheological behaviors have been analyzed, test instruments have been illustrated and development of test instruments has been elaborate presented. An instrument used for MRF rheological properties testing is designed, which based on the principle of simple shearing stream between two relative moving parallel circle plates. This instrument is consists of driving device, control device, shearing device, data sampling and processing system.Main research contents and research results originally in the article are as follows:1. The basic design scheme is drawn up based on the theoretical calculation and analysis of the MRF's rheological properties.2. Based on the fundamental principle of mechanical design, the shearing device and the drving device is designed. The conclusions show that our shear device can weaken the wall effect problem. A micro-stepping motor driver is used in this instrument and the rotation speed of step-motor can be controlled precisely.3. Based on the fundamental theory of electromagnetism, the magnetic structure is designed. The test circle plates is located inside of electromagnetism coil. The magnetic flux leakage is little and the magnetic field is uniform.4. The Calculation of magnetic field distribution show that the non-uniformity of axial magnetic distribution is lower than 1%, and of radial magnetic distribution is lower two or three orders of magnitude than of axial distribution.5.
