Heat exchangers are the typical products of the process equipment, which have been playing an important role in process engineering. With the increase of awareness of energy shortage, saving energy and reducing waste have become the major object of industrial production. As the primary performance index of heat exchangers, high efficiency and compactness have been a hot pursuit of the designers and the researchers in the past several decades. The key to develop the energy saving technology has been the design of the highly efficient heat exchangers adapted to the different working conditions. It is thus of urgent need to develop the related design methodology and software.In the thesis, the performance design and optimal selection system of compact heat exchangers(CHEs) has been developed based on the comprehensive consideration of technical performance and economic index of several commonly used CHEs. Major research progresses are summarized as follows:1) The State-of-the-Art of CHEs researches in design and software development has been reviewed. The objectives and roadmap of the thesis are thus proposed.2) The design and selection system of CHEs has been developed based on Visual Basic for calculating thermal, configuration, and stress for six kinds of heat exchangers, including plate heat exchangers, plate-fin heat exchangers, spiral heat exchangers, heat-pipe heat exchangers, fin-and-tube heat exchangers and shell-and-tube heat exchangers.3) 3-D parameter drawing based on the results of configuration caculation can be achieved by connecting VB and Solid Works, which provides the users with a straight forward visible 3-D model of the product. It helps the users to easily select CHEs.4) Various cost models including total cost of investment, annual operating cost, annual calculation cost, the present operating cost and annual operating cost are used in the economic analysis. The material purchasing, equipment abrasion and the power consumption have been considered comprehensively for optimal selection of the CHEs.5) Because of the difficulties met in conception design of compact heat exchangers, a multi-level, multi-factor and non-structural fuzzy optimum decision model is used in the optimal selection of compact heat exchangers.
