ABSTRACT: Wind erosion is one of the main environment problems in many countries. It has become an international focus because of the sand-dust storms in successive years. The scale of the sand desertification land is large in our country. They mainly locate in Midwest of China with severe wind erosions. Many railways will be constructed with the execution of China's Western Development Strategy. Railway constructions intensify wind erosions, while wind erosions affect the railway constructions and operations. So the prediction of soil erosion rate becomes important. One of prediction method by contrast of influence factors is developed and factors of coverage on ground(C ), soil erosion durability( S ), and landform(T ) are studied in this paper. The prediction method is simplified greatly by compiling the tables of factors of coverage on ground(C ) and landform(T ). Grey theory is employed in the prediction of soil erosion rate, and a computer program is written in VC++6.0 language to ease the calculation of soil erosion rate. The effect of the method is proved good through a case study. Methods in design and construction are applied to prevent wind erosion, including the controlling of railway location, the height and the slope of embankment, and the depth of cutting. Rail subgrade and the ambient area are protected by protective projects to stop wind erosion.
