In the open sea port in the northern part of China, ice force acting on wharf is the control load for calculation of wharf stability. Owing to the complexity of the interaction between the sea ice and the wharf structure, it is rather difficult to determine the ice force. Particularly on the wharf of large diameter dolphin structure, appropriate formula suitable for calculation of ice force is not available in the code of practice at the present. The present paper compares and analyses the major formulas for calculation of ice force acting on dolphin columns from codes of practices of different countries, and describes the acting patterns and impact factors of the ice force, based on the status of study on the ice and the ice force in the world. Through the modeling test of the ice force on the 300,000 DWT oil terminal at Xianren Island Harbor District of Yingkou Port, in combination of using experiences in the past for similar works, a formula is rationally determined for calculation of ice force acting on the large diameter mooring dolphins in this project. On this basis, the structure with combined cone against ice is designed and calculated for the stability. Thereby a practical problem in the engineering work is solved. In addition, a case has been provided for reference in determination of ice force acting on similar structure and in the design of the structure with combined cone, which may lay a good foundation for further updating the specification of ice force in the Code of Practice for Loads in Port Engineering.
