Lightweight soil construction has been a new method for soft clay groundwork management in recent years. It is a new developed material based on the lightness and simplicity for construction of the material itself. Construction castoff, abandoned silt, industrial waste and so on can be reused at the same time. There are many research achievements on lightweight soil in foreign countries, but not enough in our country, especially on its dynamic characteristics. In this essay, the dynamic deformation and strength characteristics of soft clay and lightweight clay-EPS beads soil (LCES) are studied using triaxial apparatus. It concludes the works as follows:(1) The dynamic stress-strain curves of both soft clay and LCES are hyperbolic type. The dynamic secant elastic modulus is introduced to analyze the test data, and the results indicate that the dynamic secant elastic modulus-strain curves of all test models are hyperbolic type. The dynamic secant elastic modulus of LCES decreases slowly than soft clay's and both increases with increasing confining pressure.(2) The damping ratio of soft clay and LCES increases with increasing dynamic strain. At the same strain level, the damping ratio of LCES is smaller than soft clay's, and it decreases to a quite low level with high cement content and low EPS content. The damping ratio of both decreases but the difference is not obvious.(3) The compressive strain 5% is considered to be the dynamic failure criterion of LCES, referring to the dynamic failure criterion of soft clay and the dynamic deformation characteristics of lightweight soil. The dynamic strength of LCES increases with increasing cement content, decreases with increasing EPS content. The influence of cement content on the dynamic strength of LCES declines with increasing EPS content. The dynamic strength of soft clay increases faster than that of LCES with increasing confining pressure.
