In practical developing, there are many expert knowledge, domain knowledge, background knowledge and consumer knowledge. How to manage, share and make use of these design resources effectively is the choke point of design. Expand parametric design method to assembly and product and achieve generalized parametric design on assembly or product will be propitious to corporation's innovation and rapid design.In order to sustain advanced technology such as concurrent design and cooperative assembly design it's necessary to enhance CAD design technique. Parametric design is not only against geometry element but also include non-geometry element such as product design request and safety factor. And more important is to use parametric design method on entire product design.This paper analyzes traditional parametric design and purpose to use generalized parametric design during entire product design. Use knowledge management and design reuse method to improve product design ability. It will shorten the time of product develop cycle and reduce innovation cost.Firstly, this paper analyses and summarizes presently research status of product parametric design. Next discuss the feasibility about to use design reuse in generalized parametric design. Secondly, use generalized parametric design method build an instance of generalized parametric model. Take shaft coupling for example and analyses its geometry dimension, power, rotate speed and torque. Thirdly, construe shaft-coupling product innovation method and has finished the development of the design system using generalized parametric design method. In the finality, the problems requiring further studies are discussed.
