With the development of economy, tall buildings are increasing. Earthquake action will play a more and more important role in the analysis and design of tall buildings. In traditional structure design, kinetic energy of structural vibration due to earthquake ground motion is dissipated by elastoplastic deformation of some components to prevent collapse under serious earthquake. But cost of the structures will be high. In recent years, the idea of performance-based design is accepted by more and more engineers, which include the conception of energy dissipation design. In the paper, the development of energy dissipation design, both here and abroad , is introduced and the work to be done is presented.Viscous dampers used in energy dissipation design are, introduced and all kinds of mechanical models are discussed according to reference documentations. The methods to calculate seismic response of structures with viscous dampers are analyzed, such as standard response spectrum method, time history method, direct analysis method, quick nonlinear time history method.Seismic analysis of an engineering example with different systems, frame structure, frame-shearwall structure and structure with viscous dampers, has been presented, using modal response spectrum method and nonlinear time history method, adapting bar modal and story modal considering different forms of mass eccentric. The result shows the seismic response of the structure with viscous dampers is reduced by 30% compared with frame structure, it is capable to control torsion effect. In the last, the comparison of the cost between frame-shearwall structure and the structure with viscous dampers is made. The whole process can be used as reference for the other energy dissipation structures design.
