Large scale building can offer vast interior space. They are extensively used for public buildings, such as gymnasium, exhibition and large assembly hall. But this kind of building's function is in conflict with fire compartment and safety evacuation, because these buildings are vast, and its fire compartment, evacuation distance, evacuation width do not satisfy the fire design code. This is a main problem that holds back the development of fire safety design for large scale building.As the most advanced method in the field of fire safety design, Performance-based fire safety design has attracted most attention. Performance-based fire safety design was started by developed countries such as Britain, America and Canada from 1970. Performance-based fire safety design has developed in China since 1996, and it has been applied to the constructions for the 2008 Olympics.This thesis analyzes the architecture feature and fire feature of large scale building, and focuses on the basic concept and basic process of Performance-based fire safety design. This paper analyzes the two key contents of large scale building of performance-based fire safety design — fire modeling and safety egress. As to fire modeling, the paper elaborates on the content and process of the fire modeling, and analyzes the special way of the fire-protection design of the large scale building and the difference between zone modeling and field modeling ; then the paper elaborates on how to use the software-FDS; also a program has been built for the use of zone modeling for large scale building. As to safety egress, this thesis also analyzes from a theoretical point of view . Finally, this paper takes a real example to show the whole process of the performance-based fire protection design. This thesis mainly analyzes the two key contents of large scale building of performance-based fire safety design — fire modeling and safety egress, hoping to promote the development of performance-based fire safety design in China.
