The accuracy of the ship model seakeeping tests is greatly dependent on the quality of the long-crested irregular waves generated in the test lab. This thesis presents a systematic study of the wave generation process in the ship model towing tank of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Through the numerical analysis, the influence of the number of wave components onto the wave generation results is discussed. The wave-making transfer function and the beach reflection coefficients were also obtained from the regular wave tests. Based on the above information, the wave-making control program was developed for the generation of the long-crested irregular waves in this towing tank. Finally, to further analyze the quality of the generated irregular waves, the uncertainty analysis was conducted for the uncertainties coming from the wave measurement hardware and the spectrum estimation algorithm. This research provides an important insight into the accuracy control and quality assessment of the irregular-wave generation in the towing tank.
