In the modern electronic techniques, measurement and control technique of frequency and time takes a very important position. This paper mainly discusses the study of some methods and its application of time interval measurement.At first, this paper introduces some kind of theory of short time interval measurement such as interpolator and vernier, and have implemented one kind of circuit which improvs the measurement resolution basing on interpolator method.In the second part of this paper analyzes the theory and technique of general measurement instrument SR620 which can measure time interval, the frequency, the cycle, and the variance. The design of circuit to measure time interval is analyzed here. The theory and realization method on its high resolution are dwelled on. By the studying of this instrument, the idea and experience on the designing of a short time interval is provided.In the third part of this paper, a new kind on high resolution of time interval measurement is present. It combine the old methods and a kind of high precision measurement method of short time interval, which effectively eliminates the effectively of the±1 error. On the foundation of this method, a high resolution time interval measurement instrument with the resolution of 4.3ns and the measurement range of 100ns-10us is designed. Base on CPLD and its corresponding EDA sofeware, exploring tools, the design of circuit is simplified and the exploring period is reduced. In addition, this paper introduce the instrument measure period, frequcy, rise/fall time and width of a signal.
