Compared with other measures to control vehicle noise, using muffler is not only the starting point but also the most efficient and economical means. Therefore, research and development the efficient and energy-saving exhaust muffler is important. Muffler's accession would affect engine performance. In the past, muffler research often focused on how to reduce noise, all but ignored the impact on engine performance of muffler structure. This paper we used numerical simulation software GT-POWER to establish a joint model of the engine and muffler, and the model is verified through experiments. A verified model was used to research the major reason of pressure loss of the exhaust system. By changing the various structure of a muffler, the reason how various structures of muffler impact on exhaust backpressure of the engine was gotten, and then its rules was summarized up. This research provides evidences for the optimization design on how to reduce the impact of engine power of muffler for the future.
