Energy sources are the basic need of human lives and development. With the fast development of social economy, petroleum, which is the representative of the one-off energy has become the'blood'of the modern civilization. However, the one-off energy of the earth is finite, and it presents the current of drying up. According to the evaluation of United Nations Energy Organization, the industrial exploitation of petroleum on the earth will present the current of being over in the next 50 years. And this period of China will be shorter, it is supposed to be 30 years by the experts. The lack of energy has become a big problem of the modern society. People have made great effort to find substitute of energy in decades, with lots of research works, contrasts and practices, they tried to find out the reproducible energy sources which are easily made and used. The concentrations of people are focused on ethanol in recent years, and fuel ethanol will become one of the burgeoning energy sources in 21st century.With the widely use of Ethanol-gasoline, this new environmental protective fuel has the advantage of better combusting ability, antiknock ability, and hydrophilic ability than the lead-free gasoline. The content of ethanol is one important index, when the concentration of additional ethanol is lower than 15%, it can ensure the vehicle running well, and improve the antiknock ability observably, and it can also increase the octane number of gasoline. Secondly, since the ethanol has the high concentration oxygen, it can accelerate the combustion, and also reduce the exhaust emissions effectively. For these reasons, the analysis of the content of ethanol in Ethanol-gasoline is a practical and imperative task.Chromatography is an important separate analysis method, it uses the character that different substances have different distribution coefficients in two matters, when the relative movement occurs between two matters, these substances areseparated by iterative distributing in two matters. Being a effective analysis method, chromatography has been widely used. The most important advantage of chromatography is that it can separate the complicated admixture and perform the quantitative analysis of every component. To use the gas chromatography to analyze the ethanol in Ethanol-gasoline, is a advanced analysis method in the world lately. It has the advantages of fast analysis, and high veracity etc. To use the gas chromatography to analyze ethanol in Ethanol-gasoline is a comparative new task in automobile industry. We used GC-6890 gas chromatography analyzer manufactured by Angilent Company USA in this research work. It is the comparative advanced instrument in the world, and it has the characteristics of high stability and wide use. According to the characteristics of the ethanol-gasoline analysis, all test conditions and factors should be determined by experiments.According to the request of the content of ethanol in Ethanol-gasoline of China, this research work based on the petroleum industry test standard of the People's Republic of China about Standard Test method for Determination of Certain Alcohols and Ethers in Gasoline by Gas Chromatography, with test condition selection experiments such as: column selection test, column case temperature selection test, carrier gas volume test, injection volume test, and detector selection test etc, we finally confirm the test parameters. We used FID( hydrogen flame ionization detector) to determine the ethanol in ethanol-gasoline, with the analysis and statistic of test data, we make the work curve and finally set up the qualitative and quantitative test method of ethanol in Ethanol-gasoline. By a lot of precision and veracity tests, it proves that analyzing the ethanol in ethanol-gasoline by gas chromatography has the comparative high veracity and applicability. The following conclusions were drawn by the experiments:1. We set up a qualitative and quantitative chromatography analysis method, and used the gas chromatography analyzer separated the ethanol in the sample.2. The manual injection volume of this method is 1μL, if we use top space sampler or auto sampler, the veracity and the precision of the results can be improved remarkably.3. The separation effect of the samples with complicated components is very remarkable by program temperature control, and the result also can meet the request of the analysis.China has laid a strong emphasis on restriction of emissions to reduce the air pollution in recent years, and it is more pertinent to lay the emphasis on'fuel'. Generalizing the use of ethonal-gasoline is one effective way to reduce the emissions. The oxygen in ethanol reinforce the oxygen supply in the cylinder, partly solve the lack of oxygen supplied by the entironment, and also solve the problem of high octane number components. With these advantages, ethonal-gasoline can reduce the emissions and improve the power performance, and the physical and chemical characters of ethanol can be fully exerted.This paper experimentally investigates engine performance and emissions of a commercial electronically controlled SI engine fueled with ethanol-gasoline blended fuel. The results show that engine power output and torque decrease at partial load and they give no reduction at full load operating condition as blended fuel is used. Ethanol-gasoline can decrease CO, HC and NOx emissions under idling condition. The brake specific fuel consumption increases by 5%~10%, but the brake specific energy consumption improves and region of fuel economy of ethanol-gasoline fueled engine becomes narrow.The experiments show that comparing lead-free gasoline, ethanol-gasoline has the following advantages:1. Engine power output and torque decrease at partial load and they give no reduction at full load operating condition as blended fuel is used.2. The brake specific fuel consumption increases by 5%~10%, but the brake specific energy consumption improves.3. Ethanol-gasoline can decrease CO, HC and NOx emissions under idling condition. The performance of ethanol-gasoline engine is depended on controlling strategy of air/fuel ratio.The research on analysis of the ethanol in ethanol-gasoline by gas chromatography and ethanol-gasoline effect on electronically controlled SI engine performance is quite practicably. It can control the quality of ethanol-gasoline, and also provide the scientific gist for gasoline engine research work which was organized by FAW R&D Center. It is now widely used in product development and research work of FAW R&D Center.
