The harmfulness which possibly brings severe consequence, generated by earthquake, is impersonally existed. It is realized and accepted that numerical simulation for study on response of embankment dam is feasible. Various influencing factors have been studied through the dynamic FEM of time-domain analysis. The main contents and conclusions of the study are described as follows:1. The preprocessing influence of FEM has been systemically studied. There are three aspects in this item which consist of meshing holistic form, the upper limit of mesh size and the processing of calculation area. The reasonable meshing principle has been presented by analysis of seismic response parameters. Calculation area under simple boundary need to include overlying stratum, and have to consider both the dam highness and the width of dam bottom.2. The influence of input seismic load has been studied, secondly. There are three aspects in this item. PGV is one of the important factors. Besides the predominant period of acceleration response spectrum, some characteristics of velocity and displacement spectrum have important influence of the seismic response. The input seismic dynamic load has to consider the influence of after-shock.3. The material parameters of rock-filled dam have been studied, thirdly. The descriptions of these parameters adopt static Duncan-Chang model and the discrete relationship of dynamics. The parameters include c, φ, k, n, R_f, k_D, n_D. The outcome in this item shows that different spans of these parameters have great influence of dam response; in addition, these influences could weaken the effect of PGV on embankment dam.
