The core wall rockfill dam that developed at the period of forties of the 20th century under the background of the development of mechanic theory and the construction equipment which can complete a great deal of earthwork in rational construction period.The soil-core wall rockfill dam has gradually become one of the mainstream dam types for high dam construction in the world for the latest decades. The core wall rockfill dam also develops quickly in china. In the latest years, only in Sichuan province there are general core wall rockfill dams of some leading reservoir projects planned in large/middle rivers. Moreover, the height of the dams is more than 200 m, some even more than 300m.This paper analyses the core wall rockfill dam at Pubugou on dadu river and the one at Qiaoqi on baoxing river in Sichuan Province by means of stress-strain analyses of plane finite element method. This paper makes a detailed research on the influence of different height of high plastic clay on arch effect of the dam at the bottom of the core wall and on stress-strain properties of the cutoff wall and the gallery.The three-dimensional calculated result is cited to check the conclusion obtained from the analyses of plane finite element method.Combining the work of this paper, some beneficial phenomenon and law are obtained on the basis of the researches carried out by predecessors and thus providing design and construction reference for the construction of similar projects.The main work of this paper is below:(1) Reviewing the domestic and overseas developmental course of the core wall rockfill dam and summing up the new development of construction of the core wall rockfill dam. Summarizing the present situation of research of arch effect and stating the impact of arch effect on embankment dam, especially on the core wall rockfill dam.(2) A brief introduction about finite element method which is one of numerical simulation is given and the basic principle of the finite element method is set forth.(3) This paper also introduces the calculating method of core wall rockfill dam and the adopted constitutive model.
