Due to the low cost and potential high efficiency, Dye-sensitized Solar Cells (DSCs) attracted a lot of interests of researchers and scientists recently. The low rate of the electron transfering through the multicrystalline network of a nano-crystalline thin film, and the low efficicency of the dye absorbing the low energy photons are two limiting factors that influence the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the cells. New one-dimensional nano-structural materials such as nanotubes, nanowires and nanorods are ideal photo-electric materials due to their high aspect ratio and large surface areas, which allows the fast transport of electrons along the direction, reduces the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, and increases the absorption of low energy photons. However, because of the difficulty in fabrication and the structural defects, the efficiency of new nano-structure DSCs is not so high and the structure needs to be improved. In this thesis, an electrical model of the high-order titania nanotubes dye-sensitized solar cells including a bulk titania barrier layer is presented, which relates material parameters to cell performance. Based on these parameters, this model permits calculation of the complete I-V characteristic of a titania nanotube DSC. A comparison of I-V characteris between titania nanotube cells and nanocrystalline cells are illustrated. Exemplary numerical results are presented, which shows the efficiency and electron transport capability differences of the two cells. The limiting factors that affect the efficiency of the titania nanotube cells are also discussed.
