Nowadays, the traffic jam has been a widely confronted problem, which influences the development of economy and public life. With no modification to the roads, Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) has been an effective solution to the problem. The equipment taking great responsiblity for acquiring traffic data, is an important component in ITS. Therefore, the research of vehicle detector plays an essential role in supplying sampling data for ITS. The loop vehicle detector has the advantages of stability, high performance-price ratio, and good adaptation, which has been widely used in the market. The software and hardware design of the loop vehicle detector based on DSP are implemented in this paper, which is on basis of the completion of the fuzzy controller at isolated intersection utilizing the data acquired by the detector. Matlab simulation is carried on to test the fuzzy controller. The main research in this thesis is as follows:(1) The real time and precise information data is the foundation of the effective control of traffic. The software and hardware design of the loop vehicle detector based on DSP is accomplished to detect the traffic flow accurately. Experimental results demonstrate the validity of the method.(2) Considering some problems occurred in current loop detector, such as high mistake rate, small range of sensitivity and no data storage device, hardware and software measures are taken to deal with these problem.(3) With the analysis of experimental results, the vehicles are classified to the large, medium, and small types, using the method of threshold filtering, which is beneficial for the analysis of history traffic data.(4) Utilizing the acquired data, complete the design of the fuzzy controller at isolated intersection based on vehicle queue, and compare the results from the Matlab simulation with the timing control results.
