The current development of static synchronous compensator, DSTATCOM, is discussed in this paper, and the operation principle is analyzed through its circuit structure. A novel mathematical model is established ,which based on the existing steady-state linear mathematical model and the nonlinear characteristics of saturation resistance of IGBT. Digital simulation results based on PSCAD/EMTDC 4.02 show that the model can explain the nonlinear characteristics of DSTATCOM.Some general control strategy and are researched and their dynamic performance are studied through the Digital simulation. A novel method is proposed to improve performance of inverse-system PI control strategy, Simulation results are provided to illustrate the merits of the method.An experimental setup of a 10-kVA DSTATCOM system based on TMS320LF2407A DSP is built to test the performance of DSTATCOM. Experimental results are provided and well analyzed in the paper. The experimental research emphasis on the start-up performance of DSTATCOM, Experimental results illustrates that well control of the inrush current prevention resistance can reduce the impact current in the moment of start-up. Besides, The relationship of the harmonic content of output current and the parameter of the link reactor, insensitive control angle of DSTATCOM, dynamic performance of general control strategy also are tested by experimentation.
