With the development of high-buildings and skyscrapers, pit excavations are used increasingly in congested cities to provide underground space. The problem about bearing water has been the hard problem in the engineering, and studies less in the academic circles. In the regulations and manuals interrelated with pit engineering, only the formulas examining the breakage of pit's bottom produced by bearing waters is presented. The distortions are not considered that are brought by bearing water.Based on this condition, this paper analyzes the different deformations of the pit, summarizes the basic theory of groundwater in geotechnical engineering, and analyzes the deformation of the retaining structure and ground settlement produced by bearing waters used by PLAXIS that is a finite element package that has been developed specifically for the analysis of deformation and stability in geotechnical engineering projects.On account of the complexity of the native geological condition and the diversity of design and construction of the pit engineering, the problems of bearing water in pit engineering are divided into two kinds of instance to discuss: the first one, the bearing water head is not depressed artificially in the excavation of the pit; the second, the bearing water head is depressed to zero artificially in the excavation. In each kind of instance, retaining structure is divided into two sorts with cantilever and braced form. In each sort, the deformation of the retaining structure and ground settlement is analyzed by diversification of bearing water head, conceal depth of bearing water and insert depth of the retaining wall.
