Building fire occurs often and it can cause great loss. The fire may bring certain damage to the building structure. To study the performanceof building elements and structure under real fire situations is one of thepopular topics on the field of current building fire protection. How to use fire models to simulate the real building fire and the structural fireresistance design based on global tructural reaction to fire under variousfire situations are the key tasks for steel structural fire resistance stuChanging the current building fire code to the performance-based one is the developing tendency of building fire code at present.This paper mainly studies how to regulate fire resistance rating ofsteel structures and elements. The conclusions and proposals-related ofthis paper will directly support revising the current national standards. Itwill regulate and advance the fire protection design of steel structuralbuildings and lay a foundation for the consensus of the fire protectiondesign on steel structural buildings in the relevant national standards aswell as the preparation of China performance-based fire code.Based on analysis of and study on the research achievements at homeand abroad as well as the provisions of related national standards, thedifferent protection methods and the main factors affecting the fireperformance of steel structure, this paper gives a theoretical method tocalculate the fire resistances required by steel structural elements. It alsogives some proposals on how to determine the related fire protectiondesign requirements of the code.1) It is unreasonable to take the data from tests as part of the compulsory requirements in national code for design of building fire protection. This paper suggests that this part of requirements should be as an explanation document in related codes or design manuals, and the testing conditions must be given in detail.2) It is suggested that in the related fire code, the ventilation situationsof a typical room should be assumed to work out the fire resistances ofdiferent occupancies and heights, then list them in tables respectivelyaccording to the occupancy, height and room (if it has sprinkler or not). Ifthe sufficient data are available, the formula given in this paper can beused to calculate the fire esistance of a specified building structure orpart of it.3) The fire protection design code should distinguish between the situations with orwithout active fire measures, and regulates correspondingly. 4) The calculation method given in this paper has some limitations.It doesn't analyze thoroughly the efect of interaction of direct and indirect fire resistance on the fire performance of structure, and it doesn'tconsider the effect of indirect fire resistance either.
