This thesis elaborates on the reasons and harm of transformer winding deformations. Based on multi-conductor transmission lines (MTLs) theory, distributing parameter emulating model of transformer windings by its individual turn is built. The simulation analysis of continuous winding deformation is done, and its result shows the validity of detecting wide band transformer winding deformations. Based on LabVIEW platform a measuring system for transformer winding deformation is developed which has the strengths of wide measuring frequency band and anti-interference. In the laboratory, the classical faults are studied on 180 turns continuous and 2×84 turns internal shield real windings. Compared with the FRA from 1kHz to 1MHz, the wide band FRA method is more sensitive in detecting winding deformations. This thesis will be of some value in terms of theory and practice for the wide band FRA detection of transformer.
