Urban traffic system is such a stochastic and complicated system that it is impossible to study of modeling and control among real traffic environment again and again. Thus, traffic simulation by computer becomes a great effective method. By traffic simulation, we can simulate various traffic phenomena, in-depth analyze various traffic characters. The traffic simulation provides a visual, effective and flexible experiment and test platform. Furthermore, the simulation can reappear urban local traffic flow phenomena and multiple simulation operations can provide us control parameter optimization and reference for decision of traffic organization. Traffic simulation get a wide application foreground in research of urban traffic control.On the base of signal control simulation and evaluation of single crossing, the paper focuses on the simulation of urban trunk road traffic flow and developes simulation software of trunk road traffic flow. The paper discusses detailedly the model research, way of design, and application sample of the software.The paper firstly introduces the application of simulation technology in the field of traffic and the domestic and abroad present status of trunk road simulation, then lists the content and emphasis in the research of this paper. Secondly, the paper introduces the application condition and way of control of signal coordinate of trunk road traffic control, and on the base of that the paper has studied and advanced two methods of trunk road signal control optimization.The model research of simulation software of urban trunk road traffic flow is one of the emphases in this paper. According to the design conception of software structure, the software is composed of six models. They are model of data collection and conversion, model of road description, model of vehicle generation, model of traffic control, model of vehicle running and model of evaluation and analysis. This paper studies in detail the contribution, mechanism and application in the software of these six models. Furthermore, the paper studies and improves on the arithmetic of transforminig lanes and avoiding bump of vehicles aimed at signal control of trunk road.On the background of scientific research item of road traffic signal control simulation in Wuxi city, this paper makes an example of two adjacent crossing of zhongshan road-renmin road and zhongshan road-chongning road in Wuxi city to discuss the practical application of simulation software of urban trunk road traffic flow. By the way of microcosmic simulation technique of traffic flow and cartoon technique of computer, the software realizes particularly the run status of mainline traffic flow. Furthermore, it provides some variable to customer though the way of dialog boxes to edit traffic parameters and control scheme parameters. At the same time of simulation, the software calculates the running evaluation indexes of trunk road's vehicles, then gives the best control scheme to the traffic administrator.At last, the paper summarizes the production of research, and gives the direction of following research work on the base of preliminary research achievements, which have acquired on urban trunk road traffic flow simulation.
