Oil shale is a kind of rotten mud fuel. There are great differences between its origin of formation and structure with coal, especially the content of volatile matter and ash in oil shale is far higher than that of coal. Thus, there are distinct differences in physics and combustion characteristics between them. China is one of the countries which have a great deal of oil shale resources in the world. Its reserves is only next to the U.S.A, Brazil, Estonia and ranks the forth. Hence, we undertook an item of the Ministry of Science and technology of the People's Republic of China, which is refining shale oil, burning oil shale semi-coke and exploiting oil shale ash comprehensively. Among them, the research of the physical chemistry characteristics of oil shale is the premise. In this paper, kinds of physical chemistry characteristics of Huadian oil shales are researched by theoretical and experimental analysis. According to proximate analysis and ultimate analysis, the composition of oil shales is researched. And the Scanning Electron Microscope technology is used to mensurate the surface structure of oil shales. The properties of oil shales such as the grindability, the density and the specific heat capacity and so on are also researched. In addition, the technology of Fischer assay retort at low temperature is adopted to study the oil yield of oil shales, and the TGA-FTIR is used to research the combustion characteristics of oil shales in different conditions, such as oil shale types, grain radius and heating rates. Based on this, the rule and correlative data of the characteristics of oil shales is acquired, and the mechanism of ignition and combustion of oil shales is also analyzed.Based on experiment data a combustion kinetic model is proposed, and the kinetic parameters of oil shales are determined by integral method (Coats and Redfern method), such as active energy, arrhenius constant and so on. In kinetic calculations, the best reaction order with linear correlation coefficient has been confirmed by thermogravimetric fit linear. In all, the result is an important base offurther researching combustion characteristic of oil shale and design of oil shale circulation fluidized bed boiler.
