Recently, the problems, such as traffic jam, increasing accidents, environment pollution, become more serious along with the fast development of economy, city and automobile industry. The city roads and intersections have not been broad enough and fall into the obstacles of the city and economic development.The traditional model-based control method is difficult to achieve good effect in urban traffic signal control system, for the reason of time-varying, stochastic and uncertain characteristics of the traffic flow. So the intelligent control methods, such as fuzzy control, artificial neural network, begin to act as main means in urban traffic signal control research field. At first, the paper regards an isolated intersection as research object, a two-stage fuzzy control method is present. The simulation results, which are operated via Matlab software between actuated control and the method proposed, have demonstrated the improvement than the actuated method. Then, this paper focuses on the control problem of four-phase scheme of main road, and describes a cooperative signal control scheme. The results indicate the method can effectively reduce the vehicle average delay. Though Fuzzy Logic Control does not need to set up precise mathematic model, however, it still presents a difficulty for deciding all the membership functions correctly only by human experience. Therefor, to solve this problem, the Genetic Algorithm is used to real-timely optimize membership functions because the Genetic Algorithm has got the strong searching ability without knowing the mechanism of the object and only driven by the fitness function. Finally, It is needed to note that, the method is not only suitable for the four-phase traffic signal control, but also can be extended to the situation of more phases in practice.
