Urban residential space is an important geographical and social field of urban social space, which provides not only educational, health careing, and recreational facilities but also environmental landscape resources. With the development of urban residential space, the increasingly developed high-level residential area, which is always surrounded by varied of environmental landscape resources, such as forests, parks, lakes, rivers, etc, influences the distribution of residential space. This phenomenon is caused by globalization, marketization, and urbanization etc, leading to the unequal social and economical development and imbalanced distribution of environmental resources. Therefore, it is a theoretical and practical issue for developing courtries, including China, to solve. From the perspective of geography, the author, focusing on the issue of the high-level residential areas and their unequal distribution of environmental landscape resources, analyzes the unequal distribution of environmental landscape resource, which actually reveals inequity in city forming and growing, through comparative analysis of three cities in other developing countries and case study of Shanghai. The thesis is composed of five chapters. In chapter 1 and chapter 2, research methods and theoretical framework, which the comparative analysis and case study are based on, are drawn out, through literature review and research background related concepts analysis.Though comparative analysis of high-level residential areas development in three cities (Jakarta, Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg) of other developing countries, the author finds some social and environmental problems attributed to unequal distribution of environmental landscape resources in chapter 3, which is deserved for Shanghai to draw lessons from.Based on the analysis above, the author makes research into the development and typical modes of Shanghai high-level residential areas since 1990, in chapter 4. And through the case studies of resorts attached high-level residential areas (Sheshan Resorting Area), riverside areas (Suzhou Creek Riverside Area), parks areas (Century Park Area) and vogue metropolis areas (Peaceful Bridge Area), the characteristics of unequal distribution of environmental landscape resources are concluded.
