This paper presents a model for real time monitoring of element contents and net calorific value of burning coal in utility boiler and carbon content in fly ash. A method is being proposed for calculating the heat release concerned, by means of a boiler's known amount of air flow, together with the oxygen content in the flue gas. An examination of properties of all kinds of domestic coals exhibited quasi-linear relationship between the amount of air required for combusting unit mass of coal and the amount of heat released. According to this relationship, a method can be derived for calculating the released heat by knowing the amount air and oxygen concerned. According to the relationship between elements in dry and ash free basis coal and energy conservation principle, this model picks up ultimate analysis information of coal from flue gas analysis, and coal moisture information from milling system; checks ash content of coal using energy balance of boiler realizes the real time monitoring of ultimate analysis and carbon content of fly ash and carbon dioxide of flue gas. Tests performed on a 600 MW set show that the result is preferably.
