Although the concept is not new, green buildings have enjoyed an increase in popularity in recent years. Green buildings are designed to be more environmentally friendly than standard buildings. Many green buildings achieve this be being more energy efficient. Passive solar technologies use the free energy received from the sun for the purpose of heating or cooling building spaces. It is the most important technology for green buildings. And it has been being development greatly in China, since the first passive solar building was built in Gansu province in 1977. With the development of passive solar building technology, there are some problem should be solved yet.First of all, the weather data for building thermal condition simulation and the methods of calculating energy consumption were contrasted and chosen. Second, some passive solar building models were created with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Simulation Research Group's software DOE2.1E. And many simulations have run with different thermal parameters, with the Typical Meteorologic Year (TMY) weather data. Using the result of simulations, the correlation between parameters and energy consumption were given for 11 cities in five climate zones in China. And the optimal thermal parameters were given on three passive solar methods, including direct gain, Trombe wall and the attached sunspace/greenhouse. And the concept of the appropriate U-value for building envelope was brought up.Third, this thesis presents a feasibility study of a zero energy building in Lhasa by passive solar design, which based on simulation result. This study indicates feasibility of a zero energy building can be build at Lhasa. A detailed analysis, description and expected performance of passive solar building design parameters are presented in this thesis. Improvements in energy efficiency for this broad sector have the potential for a tremendous overall reduction in energy consumption. Less consumption means fewer power plants are required and fewer pollutants and greenhouse gases are released to the atmosphere. Finally, some graphs and curves have been given to show the relation between the design parameters and energy consumption. As well known, the building having south window can be considered as a direct gain passive solar building. So architects, when designing the standard buildings can refer the results given in the thesis.
