MHD(Magnetohydro-dynamic) Propulsion is the late-model, non-propeller driven approach of ship propulsion. Ship is driven by the electromagnetic force. It has some merits. For example, quiet, high speed, comfort, nimble layout, control convenient and so on. It is hopeful to become the main form of ship propulsion in 21 century. The development and the current status of MHD propulsion at home and abroad were systematically introduced in this paper. The working principle of MHD propulsion and realization technology were deeply and roundly studied. Furthermore, the type of ship MHD propulsion and the characteristic of the MHD propulsion which is regarded as the best type were described in detail. The type of MHD propulsion is synthetically compared. The disadvantage and advantage of the best type is analyzed. According to the problems (electrode eroded, polluting ocean environment, etc.) which exists in the realization technology of MHD propulsion at present, a new method which is different form the idea of former MHD propulsion was proposed through deeply studying the basic equation, the momentum equation and continuity equation, mathematical model and the steady formula of liquid based on the direct current, inner magnet, linear channel MHD. The new method is painting a layer of insulating material on original electrodes in order to have electrodes untouched seawater. Under the function of alternating electric field, alternating displacement current is produced in seawater. The ship propulsion was controlled through adjusting voltage and frequency. The working principle of new method is described in this paper. The change of electromagnetic field and the electric current provided by the moment of electriferous particles in the seawater are analyzed in detail and give the simulation of electromagnetic field under the different condition.
