The general signal sources represented by Arbitrary Waveform Generator(AWG) have become one of the most popular instruments in modern testing domains. Not only AWG can generate conventional waves such as sine wave, triangle wave, square wave, etc, but also can generate unconventional waves such as linear frequency modulation wave, phrase modulation wave, amplitude modulation wave etc, more important is that it can create arbitrary wave which the users' need.The research of VXI bus-based AWG module is the main task of this paper. VXI bus-based AWG module is a basic excitation source module in the VXI test system. As a kind of register-based module instrument with VXI bus interface, it has made use of the computer and microeleconics technique efficiently, and can integrate easy with other VXI bus-based modules to build the VXI test system. So, it is one of the most important units in the automatic test system.The research of the AWG based on VXI bus is introduced according to the desire of the hardware and the software in this thesis. On the desire of hardware, This thesis deals with the implementation of the AWG based on the direct digital frequency synthesis(DDS) technique. The generator has both the function of waveform synthesizer and digital modulator. On the desire of software, uses popualr programming languages of virtual instrument, LabWindows/CVI, to exploit Soft Panel and Arbitrary Waveform Editor(AWE). Soft Panel is used to set wave parameters and control hardware module to generate corresponding waveforms. It made AWG generated conventional wave and unconventional wave that we need.
