The twenty-first century is regarded as the ocean century. The exploration and exploitation of the seas, the sea transportation, the coast defence and so on need the high speed and high performance ships. So the trimaran has become the focus of the research for her special characteristics and excellent performance.In this paper the author mainly study the resistance performance of the slant-side hull trimaran and the influence of changing the location of the side hulls on resistance. In the study, the ship model resistance tests for both the vertical side hull trimaran and the slant-side hull trimaran which have the same displacement and principal dimension have been conducted. Comparing the results, it is found that the resistance of the slant-side hull trimaran is a little bigger than that of the vertical side hull trimaran when the speed is low, but, it is contrary when the speed is high. This shows that the slant-side hull trimaran is better in high speed. Then using the CFD software Fluent the fluid of the slant-side hull trimaran model is simulated and it's resistance is calculated. The calculational results agree with the trial results approximately, which certifies that the simulation is feasible and credible. Finally the FLUENT is used to simulate the flows of the trimarans which have different positions of side hulls and corresponding resistance. In this paper, the effects of changing the longitudinal and transverse position and the slant angle of the side hulls are evaluated with three positions: 0.34L, 0.2L, 0.1L in the longitudinal direction and two positions: 1.734B, 1.156B in the transverse direction and two slant angles: 14 degree and 25 degree. The results show that the resistance performance is the best when the position of the side hull is 0.2L in longitudinal direction, 1.156B in transverse direction and 14 degree slant angle. It is also found that the resistance has relation to the lift, so we can improve the resistance performance by altering the lift. This is a characteristic of the slant-side hull.The research in this paper indicates that it is feasible for us to simulate the viscous fluid of the trimaran by FLUENT, and the slant-side hull trimaran has some characteristics and excellences of itself. The author thinks these can provide some reference for the further study.
