Because of the continuous development of electric power system, and the increasing of the system capacity, the requirement of the vacation of the high voltage electronics is improving. Using computer to calculate or analyze electric field of circuit-breaker, not only can shorten the periodic time of the design of the prediction, reduce the price of test, but also creates a good condition of design and develop for the new prediction. So how to use the advanced computer technique and scientific computing methods to exact calculate electric field of circuit breaker will be one of the most important tasks of breaker study. The electric field distribution in the arc-quenching chamber of high voltage SF6 circuit breaker has been computed using the finite element method. The electric field of the interrupter in different opening stroke has been calculated and the maximum of the electric field strength has been found. The electric distribution in the arc-quenching chamber and the electric field strength distribution along the fixed and movable contact have been obtained. Moreover, the insulation strength of the chamber has been evaluated. During the optimization, zero term optimization and one term optimization method have been determined as the optimized approach, and the structure of the movable, stationary contact has been selected as the optimized variables, the minimum of the electric field strength is considered as the optimized function, the iteration number is regarded as the convergency criteria. With the comparison of the computation results of the results of the optimized and that of the manufactured, the feasibility and efficiency of the optimized approach has been verified. the materials of the spout, the density of SF6 gas and other factors, that how to influence the insulation of the high voltage SF6 circuit breaker. It provides a reference for improving the insulation of the high voltage SF6 circuit breaker.
